Grade 5 theme worksheet for RL.5.2: a real sample, problems included
This is a real Grade 5 reading worksheet made with RapidWorksheet on 2026-09-23, shown exactly as the app produced it. The skill is determining a theme from details in a story. Below you can see page 1, download the full PDF, read every question, and see the problems we found before you would print it.

What the teacher asked for
“Grade 5 reading: 6-8 open-ended questions on theme (RL.5.2) with a short story.”
Curriculum picked in the app: Common Core State Standards. The worksheet came back titled “Finding the Theme: Grade 5” in about 10 minutes, including the automated review.
What is on the sheet
- Title, name and date lines, and short instructions that define theme as "the central message or life lesson".
- An original six-paragraph story, "The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter", with one illustration.
- Eight open-ended questions that ask students to state a theme and support it with details from the text.
- A parent/teacher tip on using problem, climax and resolution to find the theme.
- A teacher answer key with a model answer for every question.
- A list of the curriculum references the automated review used.
The 8 questions
- What is one possible theme of this story? State the theme as a message about life, and give one detail from the text that supports your answer.
- How does Maren respond when she faces the challenge of the storm and her father's danger? What does her response reveal about the story's theme? Use at least one specific detail from the passage.
- In paragraph 4, Maren pauses halfway down the ladder. What does this moment tell us about the obstacles she faces, and how does she overcome them? How does this connect to the theme?
- At the end of the story, Thomas tells Maren, "You didn't just save me today. You kept the light burning for every sailor out there." How does this statement help reveal the theme of the story? Explain using details from the text.
- What is the difference between the theme of a story and a lesson a character learns? Using this story, give an example of each and explain how they are related but not the same.
- How does Maren's role change from the beginning of the story to the end? How does this change help convey the theme? Cite specific evidence from the passage.
- Identify a second possible theme of this story. State the theme and explain how at least two events or details from the text support it.
- The word perseverance means continuing to try despite difficulties. How does the theme of this story connect to the idea of perseverance? Use at least two specific details from the text in your response.
What the automated review said
- The first curriculum check approved the plan (8/10).
- The final content review sent it back: revisions required (5/10). The layout review approved it (8/10).
- The app repaired the sheet and reviewed it again: content approved (8/10), layout approved (8/10).
The scores come from the app's own reviewers. They are not a grade from a teacher or from the organization that publishes the standards.
What we checked by hand
The questions all ask for a theme supported by text evidence, and each model answer quotes details that really are in the story. Question 3 points to the right paragraph.
Problems we found
The automated review approved this sheet, and we still found the following. We left them in the PDF so you can see them.
- “Climbing down the narrow exterior ladder was treacherous.” The rescue is hard to picture. Maren takes a rope from "near the base of the lighthouse", then climbs down an outside ladder to reach her father on the gallery; the story never says how she got above him. In the next paragraph the two of them work on the stuck door "while Maren kept the lamp burning bright", which puts her in two places at once. Fix: Add one sentence saying how Maren got above the gallery, and cut "while Maren kept the lamp burning bright" from paragraph 5.
- “safely navigated the safe channel” Awkward repetition in the last sentence of paragraph 5. Fix: Reword to "safely navigated the channel".
- “number and operations—fractions — 5.NF” The reference list at the end includes a Grade 5 math fractions domain on a reading worksheet. It is not related to this sheet. Fix: Ignore it, or delete the line before you print.
How these samples were made
A test teacher account typed one request into RapidWorksheet, picked a US curriculum and approved the plan. We then clicked the app's Download PDF button and saved the print view it opens as a US Letter PDF. Nothing on the sheet was edited. We read every question and worked every answer by hand, and we list what we found wrong on each page.
The app runs an automated content and layout review before you see a worksheet, and it prints the curriculum sources that review used. That list is a reference for you, not a certificate. These samples have not been reviewed or endorsed by the Common Core State Standards Initiative or the Texas Education Agency. Read a sheet before you hand it out.
Make your own version
RapidWorksheet is a paid subscription for teachers. You describe the worksheet in your own words, pick your state's curriculum or Common Core, approve a short plan, and get a printable sheet with an answer key. You can download it as a PDF or as a Word (.docx) file to change it in your own editor. Results vary from run to run, so the sheet you get will not match this one word for word, and it needs the same read-through.
